Curiosity got the best of the Tasty Travelers while staying at the Ocean Riviera Paradise in Playa Del Carmen Mexico. One day we decided to venture off the all inclusive resort to see what the city had to offer. The hotel staff and taxi drivers all recommended that we head on over to the hot spot in town, 5th Avenue. We took their advice and headed down to 5th Avenue. It was only about a 20 minute taxi ride.
When we arrived at 5th Avenue we realized it was a huge tourist trap. If you are looking for trinkets, souvenirs or if you would like to visit any of the many pharmacies where you are your own pharmacist, THIS IS THE PLACE FOR YOU!!!
Mamita’s Beach Club
The Tasty Travelers were looking for a different experience. Lauren described what seemed like the impossible place for me to find. The description was something like… Let’s find a place on the beach, where it’s not connected to an enclosed resort, with strong drinks, an inside location but is open air to the beach and someplace that has great food! At a complete loss, I decided to meet criteria one and start on the beach.
Coming from frigid Chicago, the sun in Playa Del Carmen felt as though it may have only been a few inches from your face, so it was nice to walk on the beach with the cool ocean water cooling you from the heat.
After passing several resorts it was time to give up and head towards the less desirable and touristy 5th avenue. As we walked up the beach towards the street, on our right was exactly what we were looking for! Mamita’s Beach Club was on the beach, was not attached to a resort, was a bit more upscale and not over crowded with tourists. It seemed like it could meet of all the requirements! After our experience with them, we were not disappointed.
I’ll admit, during my bachelor life I would tell the lucky ladies that I was dating, including my wonderful wife Lauren, that I enjoy long walks on the beach… It was all a lie… WALKING ON THE BEACH IS NOT FOR ME!!! It is incredibly exhausting!
So, after this long walk on the beach, I needed a drink…and as strong one at that! Our server at Mamita’s Beach Club must have seen the look of distress on my face and brought our drinks out almost immediately. I will add that they were the only location that I was able to find Red Bull at. (To help restore my energy level)
After a cocktail, I was able to entertain the idea for some nourishment from that exhausting walk on the beach. Mamita’s Beach Club had some delightfully different food than the resort we were staying and no time better than now to take advantage of this opportunity.
Lauren opted for the Shrimp Ceviche. I have always been skeptical of ceviche, I understand that it’s all cooked with the acid from the other ingredients. I am sorry it’s just not for me. Lauren was very happy with her choice! She described the dish as refreshing and delicious….after every single bite! I was a little jealous of the fresh avocado that topped her dish.
I went with the Beach Nachos. Although this was a safe option, it was delicious as well. Everything just tasted light, fresh and delicious. The picture says it all.
After eating we were not rushed out of our perfect pair of seats. We stayed and had another cocktail while enjoying the beach while not being on the beach!
Thank you Mamita’s Beach Club
