Luis and I are very busy at work and taking care of our kids! We don't get out as often as we would like. But, we try to dedicate time to ourselves as often as we can. As much as we would like to go on extravagant vacations on a monthly (or more often) basis, it's just not feasible. So, whenever we have the chance, we try to get away for the weekend.
One of our most favorite times of the year to try to get away is at the end of January. Why you ask? Because it's Restaurant Week in Chicago! There's not many things that we love more than food! Restaurant Week gives us the chance to eat at extraordinary restaurants while staying within a budget. Because we are able to save money on our fabulous meals, we take advantage! We go full out for the entire weekend. We have ventured to downtown Chicago for the last couple of years at this time of year and have really loved it. It is our tradition! The money that we are able to save on food, we spend on luxurious accommodations and elaborate experiences. This year was no different.
Luis will be detailing all of our weekend details in a more robust post. I just couldn't wait to share with you our journey to the Waldorf Astoria, so here is a sneak peak at this fabulous hotel! Seriously, I am a Waldorf Astoria believer and wish that every hotel could meet the standards that the Waldorf Astoria exceeds! Check out a few of the highlights below! You will not be disappointed!
From the moment that we stepped foot into The Waldorf Astoria, we knew we were in for a real treat! The staff was so happy to see us! Seriously, we have been to A LOT of hotels and never have we been greeted by such happy people! I could really tell that the employees felt that they were positively impacting our experience every step of the way!
When we arrived, we were greeted at our car with a very friendly, and eager Waldorf Astoria employee to help us with our luggage. They brought it into the front desk where we checked in. The front desk staff was 100% committed to making sure that we had a wonderful stay. Anything that we needed, they could help out with. They gave us their name and as soon as we got settled into our room, they texted us to see if we needed anything.
The Guest Room
When we arrived to our room, we were quite pleased with the size of the room (we did not upgrade to the larger room, instead we opted for the more economical standard room). The room was very clean , organized well and it had full crown moulding around the ceilings! I know, crown moulding doesn't sound like much. But, I will tell you that it makes a huge difference in a hotel. I was impressed and wondered when we would be adding crown moulding to our ceilings!
My favorite part of the entire hotel was the bathroom! Seriously, it was AMAZING! Every single thing that you could want in a bathroom was here! From the beautiful marble fixtures, to the amazing lighting elements, to the separate HUGE shower, to the most amazing bath tub I have ever seen in a hotel. It was fabulous! I have NEVER taken a bath in a hotel before. I just think it's unsanitary and I can't bring myself to do it. But, over the weekend I took not 1, not 2, but 3 baths! The staff restocks bath salts each day. Let me tell you, this is the best bathtub I have ever seen (the pictures don't clearly depict it's enormous size!)! It's like a swimming pool, but in the bathroom!
I asked Luis if we could get one just like it for at home, but he said that we would need to tear down our entire existing bathroom to accommodate it. I guess we will just need to go back to The Waldorf Astoria Chicago every time I want to take a bath instead of a shower. I'm totally fine with that!
The decor of The Waldorf Astoria was elegant but not overly "ritzy." Quite honesty, I was expecting outdated gold leaf everywhere. I was so excited to see the modern approach that The Waldorf Astoria took on every aspect of their decorating!
Anyone that knows me knows that I LOVE all things that sparkle and shine and The Waldorf Astoria Chicago came through for me with their lighting fixtures throughout! Everywhere I looked there were crystal chandeliers. I was quickly distracted in my conversations with Luis by all of the sparkles! The foyer of the Waldorf Astoria is home to one of the most wonderful crystal lighting fixtures that I have seen! Equally as impressive were the ceiling mounted crystal lighting fixtures in the guest rooms as well as the spectacular egg shaped chandelier in the spa area. I was similarly impressed by the wallhanging on the way to the spa. It has individual petals on the wallhanging. It was a beautiful site to see!
The Gym and Pool
So, there's a gym and a pool too! I would expect that a hotel of this size would have a gym. The Waldorf Astoria, once again did not disappoint! Anyone that knows Luis and myself know that we are not big into the gym scene. But, I had to see if it met my expectations! I thought it would be a bit larger, but overall I was impressed with the amount of equipment that they had and the cleanliness of everything. There are several rooms filled equipment to meet just about anyone's needs. I was really impressed that each and every machine had a brand new bottle of water and a clean towel. There is nothing worse than going to workout, or going for a swim and not having enough bottled water or clean towels. No worries here! Kudos to the Waldorf Astoria Chicago for this really nice touch!
The pool is perfect for doing laps or just relaxing. When we went to the pool, there was nobody there. Literally, a private pool for our use! How exciting!
The main thing that stands out in my mind about The Waldorf Astoria Chicago is the service! From the moment we entered the hotel until the moment we left, we were made to feel like we were the only guests at the entire hotel. About an hour before we were heading out for our dinner reservations, Luis took a look at his shoes and realized that the snow that we had over the weekend really hit his shoes hard. No fear, The Waldorf Astoria shoe shine service was there to help us out! He contacted the front desk and they were happy to accommodate us with their complimentary shoe shine service. Luis' shoes were like new in less than one hour!
We prepared cocktails before dinner in our room with the help of The Waldorf Astroria's ice delivery straight to our room. No more wandering around, going from floor to floor looking for an ice maker. They brought the ice straight to our room for us! When we checked out of the hotel, the complimentary car service (Mercedes) drove us straight to the train station! No waiting, no Ubering, no walking. Just easy, relaxing travel, thanks to The Waldorf Astoria!
We had a wonderful time, in part due to the exceptional service that we received at The Waldorf Astoria Chicago!
