What is goulash? I had to google it. Goulash is a traditional stewed dish served in Hungary. Your kids will think it is very similar to spaghetti. If you have kids, they will love it! Growing up as a kid, Luis often ate “American Chop Suey.”
I was not familiar with this recipe nor had I ever eaten Goulash. But, I have seen so many people talking about and searching for goulash lately that I thought we should give it a try. Luis was thrilled and immediately went back to the good memories of his childhood eating “American Chop Suey.” In all honesty, I don’t know what the difference is between that and goulash, if any.
Luis made this dish all on his own and even added in some of his favorite ingredients- including the green peppers. Luis was so proud of himself when he made this..he said..”This is pretty damn good! I’m not going to lie!” This recipe exceeded our expectations. We will be making it again!
Tips for this recipe:
1.Use beef broth! So many recipes call for water. The beef broth adds a robust flavor that you just could not get with water!
2.Use the macaroni that has the ridges in it. It will help the noodle hold on to the sauce.
3.To make this recipe even easier, you can substitute everything except the ground beef, beef broth, noodles and green peppers for a jar of your favorite pasta sauce!
4.Add in shredded mozzarella cheese when you take the Ninja Foodi lid off. You will end up with a delicious cheesy goodness! You wont regret it!
How to make Goulash in the Ninja Foodi:

I am sure this is very delicious but it is not authentic gulyas. Hungarian gulyas resembles more to soup than casserole. They don’t put noodles in it. They also don’t add tomato paste. There is no soy sauce in a Hungarian recipe, ever. And, I have never had shredded cheese in a gulyas. Again, I’m sure this is very yummy, but don’t call it gulyas.

Hi Erika, You’re right! This is not the traditional goulash you are referring to. It is the “American chop suey” version as some call it. It’s an American version of the dish that is called goulash. Same name, but different recipe than the original.

I never read the recipe on this page. I went straight to the print version. The print version doesn’t say when to add the green peppers, so when I was at step 7, I was like. wait…. it doesn’t even say when to add these. Luckily I had not poured the liquids in yet, so added to the already cooked onion and ground beef and did a little longer.
I really loved the flavor of the finished product, but the pasta was so overcooked and slimy I couldn’t eat it. I always cook everything al dente on the stove. My kids liked it, so might try again and pressure cook for 2 mins. Or maybe skip that cup of water.

Hi Amanda! Thank you so much for pointing out my typo. ๐ I fixed that.:)
As far as the pasta goes, if you like your pasta a little less cooked, you can totally reduce the pressure cooking time to ensure that the pasta is less cooked.

Oh my godness me. Goulash is a traditional Hungarian soup and we donโt ad amy kind of pasta to it.
TheTastyTravelers
Hi Judit, Yes, you are correct! The traditional goulash is a Hungarian soup with no pasta. This is our recipe for American goulash also known as American Chop Suey. ๐

Delicious. Great for a big crowd. I served it with bread and butter and sprinkled Parmesan cheese on it. I used liquid aminos in place of soy sauce, and red pepper instead of green as that is hat I had on hand. The instructions do not say when to add the green pepper, but I added it before the liquids were added.

Used regular elbows and pasta sauce. Waited to stirring until all done. Turned out really good

Looking to make this tonight. Really silly question do you cook add uncooked noodles or cook the noodles prior? I am substituting ground turkey bc that is what I have.
Thank you
TheTastyTravelers
Hi Erika! For this recipe you add in uncooked pasta. Enjoy!
Christine Spencer
No pit the noodles in uncooked, but they should be literally laid on top of everything and not stirred in at all! If you stir it in it will give you a burn notice because it’s too thick you want all the liquids on the bottom and the pasta on the top I promise it turns out perfect!! that’s the same with spaghetti as well you break the spaghetti in half and lay little layers of it back and forth in opposite directions on the top never started in, hope this helps

Can I add sugar to the sauce to cut the acidity or will that turn out horrible with the other ingredients?
TheTastyTravelers
Sure! I sometimes add sugar for the same reason. It just depends on the sauce you are using. Some sauces need the extra sugar and some donโt.
