The Ninja Creami is the most popular frozen treat maker on the planet! It’s been around for a few years, but now…there’s a New Ninja Creami…and it makes soft serve in addition to scoopable ice cream.
You’re probably wondering what’s different about the Ninja Creami Swirl NC700 (Ninja Swirl by Creami) and is it better than the other versions…Let’s find out!

***Image is not my own. It is from Ninjakitchen.com
For starters, let’s quickly go over what a Ninja Creami is and how it works.
If you’ve heard of a Pacojet, just think of the Ninja Creami as the cooler version of it.
The Ninja Creami a frozen treat maker. The basic concept is this: You make an ice cream base using just about any ingredients that you want, you pour that ice cream base into a Ninja Creami container, freeze on a level surface for 24 hours, then you take it out of the freezer and put it in the Ninja Creami machine to process that frozen base into a frozen treat.
Unlike other ice cream makers, the Ninja Creami does not actually freeze the ice cream. Instead, it takes a frozen mixture and shaves it down while mixing everything together to create a creamy frozen treat.
Ninja Creami Swirl Specifications (US Version):
- What’s included: Motor base, outer bowl with lid, creamerizer paddle, 2 16 ounce containers and lids (storage lids and processing lids), drip tray, and a soft serve dispensing lid.
- The Swirl has 13 functions: Ice Cream, Frozen Yogurt, Fruit Whip, Frozen Custard, Creamifit, Lite Ice Cream, Milkshake, Sorbet, Gelato, and Mix-in (bold are new). Some functions are available as both soft serve and scoopable, which makes the 13 processes.
- There is a soft serve function called Creamifit which is specifically designed to process high protein base recipes.
- The package comes with the Ninja Creami Swirl base, outer bowl, outer bowl lid, 2 16 ounce containers and lids, paddle, one dispensing lid.
- Watt Motor: 800 watts
- Dimensions: 17.52×10.04×15.16 inches
- Weight: 20.83 pounds
- Cord Length: 31.5 inches
- BPA Free
- Everything except the base unit itself is top shelf dishwasher safe.
What’s different about the Ninja Creami Swirl?
- The Swirl is the only Ninja Creami that has a built in soft serve function. You have the option to choose SOFT SERVE or SCOOP on the machine.
- The Swirl has 10 function buttons but some work for both the scoop and soft serve functions. So technically, there’s 13 functions: Ice Cream, Frozen Yogurt, Fruit Whip, Frozen Custard, Creamifit, Lite Ice Cream, Milkshake, Sorbet, Gelato, and Mix-in (bold are new).
- 6 Soft Serve options: Ice Cream, Frozen Yogurt, Fruit Whip, Frozen Custard, Creamifit, and Lite ICe Cream
- 7 Scoop options: Ice Cream, Frozen Yogurt, Creamifit, Lite Ice Cream, Milkshake, Sorbet, and Gelato
- The containers are DIFFERENT than the containers for the other Ninja Creami machine and cannot be used interchangeably. The 16 ounce containers have a different bottom and top which makes it possible to attach to the machine for the soft serve option.
- There is a dispensing lid that attaches to the container that allows the soft serve ice cream to dispense into a cone.
- The footprint of the machine is much wider than the other models.
- The Swirl only makes 16 ounces of ice cream at a time, whereas the deluxe model can make 24 ounces at once.
- There is a soft-serve function called Creamifit which is specifically designed to process high protein base recipes. The manufacturer recommends using ultra-filter protein shakes for this function.
- The soft serve function spins the paddle faster and for a longer period of time than when using the scoop functions. Soft serve creates softer ice cream and scoop creates thicker ice cream
- There is a RETRACT button on the machine. This button is used to retract the extruder from the soft serve side of the machine so you can release the container and save your leftovers for later.
How does the Ninja Swirl by Creami work?
The Ninja Swirl by Creami does NOT freeze the ice cream.
- Make a base recipe (one that does not have mix-ins) and pour it into the Ninja Creami Swirl container.
- Freeze for 24 hours.
- Take it out of the freezer and then process on the right side of the machine using one of the soft serve functions. (Push the soft-serve button and then choose one of the lit-up options.)
- Once it has finished processing, take it out of the right side of the machine and change the lid to the dispensing lid.
- Insert the container with the dispensing lid to the soft serve portion of the machine on the left (line the blue tabs up) and then twist clockwise until the base extends to the open position.
- Pull the handle on the right side of the machine down (there are 3 speeds), and then move the handle back to the upright position when you are finished serving. The machine takes the ice cream that you make and extrudes it through a soft serve attachment so that it can be served on a cone.
Ninja Creami Swirl FAQs
The Ninja Swirl by Creami is available at Amazon USA, Crate and Barrel and Ninja Kitchen in the US and Walmart in Canada.
The Deluxe uses 24 ounces containers. All other Ninja Creamis, including the Swirl use 16 ounce containers.
No, they are not the same and they are not interchangeable. The Swirl, Deluxe, Original, and Breeze machines all use different containers and they can not be used interchangeably. Each machine requires that you purchase the specific containers for that model.
No, the Ninja Creami does not have a cooling mechanism. This means you need to freeze all bases in the Ninja Creami Swirl containers for 24 hours before processing the ice cream in the Ninja Creami Swirl. This goes for the soft serve function as well.
To make Ninja Creami Swirl soft serve ice ream, you need to make a base recipe, pour it into the Ninja Creami Swirl container, freeze for 24 hours, process on the right side of the machine using one of the soft serve functions, change the lid to the dispensing lid, insert the container with the dispensing lid to the soft serve portion of the machine on the left and then twist, pull the handle on the right side of the machine down, and then move the handle back to the upright position when you are finished serving. The machine takes the ice cream that you make and extrudes it through a soft serve attachment so that it can be served on a cone.
Yes, you can make both scoopable and soft serve versions of protein based ice cream using premade protein shakes or by adding in protein powder to your base recipes.
Re-spin is used when you have already processed your frozen treat in the Ninja Swirl by Creami and the texture comes out a little dry or powdery. Just put the container back into the right side of the machine and choose the re-spin option. The machine will process the ice cream again and the result should be a thick and creamy ice cream. In some cases, if the ice cream is really dry, you may need to add a tablespoon or so of liquid before using the re-spin option.
Yes, you can use dairy alternatives instead of dairy in most recipes. Keep in mind that the lower the fat content of the dairy substitute, the more likely it is that the final result will be a little icy.
The recommended freezing time is 24 hours. Shorter freeze times may work, based on your ingredients and the temperature of your freezer.
The recommended freezer temp when using the Swirl side of the machine is between 9°F and 0°Fahrenheit. (-13° to -18° Celsius.)
You cannot put frozen fruit into the container and process right away. Instead, thaw the frozen fruit, blend (with or without other ingredients), pour into the Ninja Creami container, freeze for 24 hours, and then process using the appropriate function on the machine.
The machine is made to process frozen bases, not thawed bases. If you are using the proper ingredients, following the manufacturers instructions, and have the proper freezer temperature, you should have no problem processing straight out of the freezer.
Popping sounds can sometimes be heard, but don’t worry, it’s just a few air bubbles in the ice cream.
