Frozen yogurt has a totally different flavor and texture than ice cream because of the tangy yogurt base. It’s lighter, a little tart, and has that classic frozen yogurt shop taste. This Ninja Creami chocolate frozen yogurt has that same flavor and texture, but with a really rich chocolate flavor on top of it.
A lot of low calorie chocolate ice cream recipes end up tasting kind of bland or watery. This one has a really strong chocolate flavor because the cocoa powder gets blended right into the base where it can really shine. The result is a frozen yogurt that actually tastes like chocolate, not just a hint of chocolate.

100% unsweetened cocoa powder is what gives this frozen yogurt that real chocolate flavor without adding any sugar. You can also use dark cocoa powder for a richer, deeper chocolate flavor, just know that dark cocoa is a little more bitter so you may need to increase the sweetener a bit to balance it out. Whichever cocoa powder you choose, the flavor really comes through in the final yogurt.

Allulose is my go-to sweetener for Ninja Creami recipes like this one because it’s a 1:1 ratio with sugar and doesn’t have that fake aftertaste like some other sweeteners. The sweetness level is just right with a third of a cup, but you can adjust to taste before freezing.

If you want to add some mix-ins to this Ninja Creami frozen yogurt, there are so many fun options that would work really well. Chopped chocolate chips, brownies, M&Ms, Oreos, or pecans would all be amazing. Just know that mix-ins will add quite a few calories to the pint, so if you’re trying to keep this as a low-calorie treat, stick with the base recipe or use mix-ins sparingly.
Tips for making Ninja Creami Low Calorie Chocolate Frozen Yogurt
Yes, you can use dark cocoa powder in this recipe for a richer, deeper chocolate flavor. You may need to increase the amount of sweetener used since dark cocoa powder tends to be a little more bitter tasting.
Yes! Chocolate chips, brownies, M&Ms, Oreos, or pecans would all be great mix-ins. Just know that mix-ins tend to add a lot of calories, which will drastically increase the calorie count for the pint.
It is VERY common for the mixture to be powdery after processing, so don’t panic if that happens! If it’s dry and powdery, add a tablespoon or so of milk down the center and re-spin. If it looks like little balls of ice cream, just re-spin without adding any liquid. You may have to re-spin a few times.
Yes, any zero sugar or low sugar Greek yogurt will work in this recipe. Just keep in mind that the flavor and texture of your final frozen yogurt will depend on the yogurt you use.
Yes, you can use your favorite granulated sweetener as long as it’s a 1:1 ratio with sugar. Monk fruit sweetener, regular sugar, maple syrup, honey, or agave would all work, just know that the calorie and net carb counts will change based on what you use.

Ingredient tips and substitutions
The full ingredient list is at the bottom of this post in the recipe card.

- Zero Sugar Vanilla Greek Yogurt: I use Chobani zero sugar vanilla Greek yogurt for this recipe, but any zero sugar or low sugar Greek yogurt will work. The higher the fat content of the yogurt, the creamier the texture will be.
- Whole Milk: You can use any dairy or non-dairy milk in place of whole milk, just know that the higher the fat content, the creamier the frozen yogurt will be (fat-free Greek yogurt or skim milk will give you a more icy texture).
- Allulose Granular Sugar Substitute: You can use your favorite granulated sweetener that is a 1:1 ratio with sugar, like monk fruit sweetener, real sugar, maple syrup, honey, or agave.
- 100% Unsweetened Cocoa Powder: Regular unsweetened cocoa powder works great in this recipe, and you can also use dark cocoa powder for a richer, deeper chocolate flavor (just be ready to add a little more sweetener since dark cocoa is more bitter).
- Whole Milk (Optional): This only gets used if the frozen yogurt looks powdery or like sand after the first spin, and any dairy or non-dairy milk works in its place like 2% milk, heavy cream, almond milk, coconut milk, oat milk, or Fairlife milk.
Directions for Making the Ice Cream Mixture

- Pour the yogurt, milk, allulose, and cocoa powder into a small blender and blend until all ingredients are fully combined. Pour the mixture into a Ninja Creami container.
- Freeze on a level surface for 24 hours. Your freezer should be between 9 and -7 degrees Fahrenheit.
Directions for Processing the Ice Cream Mixture

- After 24 hours, remove the Ninja Creami container from the freezer. If there is a large bump in the frozen yogurt, melt or scrape the large bump so that the top is level.
- Place the Ninja Creami container into the outer bowl of the Ninja Creami and then process on “LITE ICE CREAM.”
- If the frozen yogurt is dry or crumbly looking (like sand), pour in a tablespoon or two of milk and then re-spin. If the frozen yogurt looks more like little balls of ice cream, re-spin without adding liquid. You may have to respin a couple of times.

Use Magic Shell Instead of Chocolate Chips as a Ninja Creami Mix-In
If you’ve been adding chocolate chips to your Ninja Creami ice cream as a mix-in and ending up with little frozen rocks in your ice cream, there’s a better way. Can You Use Generic or Knock-Off Ninja Creami Containers?
This question comes up constantly in the Ninja Creami community. Can you use generic or knock-off containers? Here’s the honest answer, along with what I found when I actually measured them myself and where to find the real ones. Can you use generic or knock-off Ninja Creami containers? Technically, yes. Generic containers CAN work. But they can also cause the containers to get scratched, or cause the machine to malfunction. And using non-Ninja approved accessories can void your warranty. So yes, you can use knock-offs. But at your own risk. Many people swear that their Temu or Amazon third-party containers […]

Can You Use Ice in the Ninja Creami?
One of the most important rules for keeping your Ninja Creami safe is this: no ice. That means no ice cubes, no crushed ice, and no pure frozen water. Here’s what that actually means, what counts as ice, and why water as part of a recipe is a completely different thing. Can you use ice in the Ninja Creami? No. You cannot put ice cubes or crushed ice into the Ninja Creami container. Pure water frozen alone is essentially ice and has the same problem. The machine is not designed to process ice and doing so can damage the paddle […]

How to Get Rid of Ice on the Outside of Ninja Creami Ice Cream
Sometimes a layer of ice forms around the inside walls of the Ninja Creami container during freezing, sitting between the outer edge of the frozen base and the container. If that ice gets mixed into the ice cream when you process it, it can affect the texture and make it icier than it should be. Here’s how to fix it so that the ice cream is creamy instead of icy. Why does ice form around the outside of the frozen base? When the base freezes, moisture from condensation or from the base itself can collect between the frozen mixture and […]

When to Use Re-Spin vs. Processing on Ice Cream Again in Ninja Creami
Re-Spin and the Ice Cream function on the Ninja Creami are not interchangeable. Using the wrong one at the wrong time will not give you the result you’re looking for and can even damage your machine. Here’s exactly when to use each one. What is the difference between Re-Spin and processing on Ice Cream? Ice Cream (and other processing functions) are designed to process a frozen solid base. Re-Spin is designed to further smooth a base that has just been processed, but came out with a texture that isn’t quite right. They are two different functions for two different situations. […]
