Fried potatoes with onions is the perfect side dish. It’s fairly quick and easy to make and goes well with just about any main course. I’ve included instructions on how to make fried potatoes and onions using a Ninja Foodi PossibleCooker Pro and the traditional stovetop method.
Fried potatoes and onions is one of my all-time favorite side dishes. I make these several times a month and we just love them! I almost always serve them when I make chicken fried steak for dinner but they would be great for breakfast served alongside bacon and eggs or with a veggie omelet.

This recipe was made using the Ninja® Foodi® PossibleCooker™ PRO.
These potatoes go way back. My mom use to always make them but I would never eat them because I wasn’t a fan of onions. Well, I’m no longer a kid and have learned how amazingly delicious sautéed onions are. So much so that now sometimes I think…I should have put more onions in that!!! Seriously, the crispy little sautéed onions could be the best part of this side dish.
I usually make fried potatoes and onions on the stove in a big frying pan. But, I’ve been experimenting with my Ninja Foodi Possible Cooker Pro and used it to make fried potatoes and onions instead of the frying pan, and they turned out great!!

Keep in mind that we are not deep frying the potatoes in this recipe. Deep frying requires a lot more oil and a deep pot or a cooking appliance that has the necessary safety standards required for deep frying. The Ninja Foodi Possible Cooker Pro is not intended for deep frying.
I personally would not want to deep fry the potatoes and onions anyhow. They would turn out much crispier and more like chips. That’s not the goal here. We just want to sauté the potatoes and crispy up the edges and smaller pieces.

I usually only season the potatoes with salt and pepper and then dip them in a little bit of ketchup. But, you can customize the seasonings however you would like and change up the flavor based on what you want to serve them with. Add a little garlic powder, paprika, rosemary, thyme, or any of your fresh herbs. You could even add powdered mixes like ranch or Italian dressing powder.

Tips for making Fried Potatoes with onions:
No, you do not need to boil the potatoes before “frying” them. Since the potatoes are thinly sliced, they will cook and become tender pretty quickly. The thinner you slice the potatoes, the quicker they will cook and the crispier they will be.
I do not peel the potatoes. The potato skin helps the sliced potatoes hold together and it gets a little crispy.
It’s important to note the fried potatoes and onions are not super crispy. The edges of the potatoes get crispy while the rest of the potato slices remain a bit soft. The longer you cook the potatoes, the crispier they will become. But, be careful that you don’t cook them too long or the onions will burn and taste bitter.
Store the leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. The potatoes will last for several days when stored properly. When reheating the potatoes and onions, you can microwave them until warm or cook over medium-high heat in a skillet with a little bit of butter or oil, on the stovetop. I prefer to heat them in the skillet as they tend to get a bit soggy when reheated in the microwave.
I prefer to use russet or Idaho potatoes but have also had good success with using Yukon gold and red potatoes. Potatoes cook at different speeds, so just keep an eye them and flip them often so that they don’t burn.
Ingredient substitutions for making Fried Potatoes with onions:
The full ingredient list is found at the bottom of the post in the recipe card.

Butter– I prefer to use salted butter but you can use unsalted butter or margarine.
Onion– White or yellow onion, chopped small. I cheat and use frozen chopped onions because I always have them on hand. If you really like onion, you can slice the onions and leave them in larger pieces if you prefer. The larger the pieces of onion, the longer it will take to sauté.
Russet Potatoes (Sliced into thin rounds-⅛-¼ inch thick)- Russet potatoes work really well for this recipe. They cook pretty quickly and get a nice crispy edge on them. While you can use different types of potatoes, I prefer russet.
Canola Oil– Use your favorite cooking oil. We aren’t deep frying the potatoes so you won’t need a whole lot of oil. I prefer to use canola oil or vegetable oil.
Salt-I prefer to use freshly ground, coarse salt but you can use all-purpose tables salt.
Pepper– Freshly ground black pepper.

Pixybrat says
I love fried potatoes and onions. My mom always cooked them with fries chops and/or pinto beans when I was a kid. Good old fashioned comfort food. 1/4 cup is equivalent to FOUR tablespoons but recipe shows 1 tablespoons (1/4 cup), so I’m wondering which it is that you use? 1 tbsp or 4 (1/4Cup)?
Lauren Cardona says
For some reason the metric conversion calculations were calculating improperly. Thanks so much for pointing that out. I’ve corrected it. It’s 1/4 cup.
