The Ninja Creami ice cream maker is a great way to make a protein packed, healthy ice cream recipe that tastes like chocolate covered strawberries. For this recipe, I used fresh strawberries, dark cocoa powder and zero-sugar chocolate chips to get the taste and texture of chocolate covered strawberries!
You’re probably thinking, why not just add chocolate covered strawberries as mix-ins instead of melted chocolate chips and fresh strawberries… Well, technically, you could use already made chocolate covered strawberries as mix-ins, but chocolate covered strawberries can be quite expensive to buy and it’s unlikely that you will find any that don’t have added sugar. So, instead, you can use fresh strawberries and make your own sugar-free, chocolate bits to add to the ice cream. When you add the melted chocolate chips, they harder when they are mixed with the cold ice cream.
If you want even more strawberry flavor, I would recommend adding fresh strawberries to the base recipe before freezing, instead of adding strawberry extract as extract tends to have a fake strawberry taste. While you could add more strawberries as mix-ins, it’s more likely that the ice cream will be very soft as the strawberries add quite a bit of moisture to the ice cream and that tends to make it much softer.

Tips for making Ninja Creami Chocolate Covered Strawberry Protein Ice Cream:
Yes, as long as you thaw them first. The strawberries are added as mix-ins and frozen strawberries don’t work well as mix-ins. Fresh strawberries are a better choice because they are firmer and fresher tasting than frozen strawberries..
No! I will say that I was PLEASANTLY surprised when I started using them. They taste great and provide just enough chocolatey goodness! You’d never know that they don’t have any sugar in them!
Melting the chocolate chips helps to incorporate little flakes of chocolate throughout the ice cream instead of big chunks of chocolate that aren’t evenly distributed throughout the ice cream. If you don’t want to use melted chocolate chips, you can use magic shell or chopped chocolate chips instead.
Technically, yes. But, I would try to stick with an unflavored protein powder. I used whey protein but you can experiment with other types of protein powder like dairy-free, plant-based , soy, casein, egg white, pea, or hemp protein powder. The texture may vary based on the type of protein powder that you use.
Re-spin is your friend. If the ice cream is dry or crumbly looking (like sand), pour in a tablespoon or two of unsweetened almond milk and then re-spin. If the ice cream looks like little balls of ice cream, respin without adding liquid. You may have to repeat this process a couple of times.
Something to keep in mind is that you will be adding strawberries as the mix-in. Strawberries have a high water content. When you add the strawberries as the mix-in, it will make the ice cream softer and creamier. So, don’t re-spin this recipe unless it’s really dry and crumbly.

Ingredient tips and substitutions for making Ninja Creami Chocolate Covered Strawberry Protein Ice Cream:
The full ingredient list is at the bottom of this post in the recipe card.
- Unsweetened Almond Milk-Almond milk works really well in Ninja Creami protein ice creams. But, if you prefer, you can use cow’s milk, lactose free milk like Fairlife, coconut milk, oat milk, or any other dairy or dairy substitute. The higher the fat content, the creamier the ice cream will be.
- Unflavored Whey Protein Powder-I love to use unflavored protein powder because it can go in any recipe and you can’t taste it. So, regardless of the flavor of ice cream that you are making, you can add it. I use GNC Unflavored Whey protein powder, but you can use whatever brand you prefer.
- Swerve Sugar Substitute Granulated-Allulose Blend– Use your favorite sugar or sugar substitute that is a 1:1 ratio with sugar. Monk fruit, Stevia, Splenda, or real sugar will all work similarly. Make sure you like the taste of the sweetener before adding it to the ice cream.
- Dark Cocoa Powder-The dark cocoa powder adds the perfect, deep cocoa flavor. If you don’t have dark cocoa powder, you can use regular cocoa powder but the flavor won’t be quite as rich.
- Guar Gum-Xanthan gum can be used if you don’t have guar gum.
- Strawberries-Fresh or frozen (thawed) strawberries.
- Zero-Sugar Chocolate Chips-Regular chocolate chips or pieces of chocolate candy bars can be used instead of the zero-sugar chocolate chips. But, you can’t even tell there’s no sugar in the zero-sugar chocolate chips!
Directions for Making the Ice Cream Mixture
- Pour the unsweetened almond milk, protein powder, sugar substitute, cocoa powder, and guar gum into a small blender and blend together until all ingredients are well combined. Pour the mixture into the Ninja Creami pint container.
- Freeze on a level surface for 24 hours. Your freezer should be between 9 and -7 degrees Fahrenheit. To avoid getting a bump on the top of the frozen mixture, freeze with the lid off of the container.

Directions for Processing the Ice Cream Mixture
- After 24 hours, remove the pint container from the freezer.
- Place the pint container into the outer bowl of the Ninja Creami and then process on “LITE ICE CREAM.”
- If the ice cream is dry or crumbly looking (like sand), pour in a tablespoon or two of unsweetened almond milk and then re-spin. If the ice cream looks like little balls of ice cream, respin without adding liquid. You may have to repeat this process a couple of times.
- Dig a well down the center of the ice cream and pour in the cut-up strawberries and melted chocolate chips. Process on mix-ins.
- Remove the pint from the machine and enjoy!

How Long Can You Freeze a Ninja Creami Base Before Processing?
Everyone knows that it’s recommended to freeze your Ninja Creami base for 24 hours before processing. But does it need to be frozen for exactly 24 hours?
