What’s the black greasy stuff on the Ninja Creami lid and in the ice cream?

Some Ninja Creami users have reported that they have found black, greasy residue when wiping down the spindle, under the lip of the machine where the spindle comes out, and even in the ice cream. Find out if this is normal and what to do if it happens with your machine.

Reasons why this may happen…

There are various reasons that this can happen, none that have been confirmed by the manufacturer.

There is lubricant (usually food grade) inside of the machine that helps make the machine function properly. With use, some of the lubricant can start to come out of the machine where the spindle is. For many things, this would not be an issue. But with the Ninja Creami, that means that the lubricant can get into the ice cream. If you are seeing black, greasy residue in the ice cream, I would not recommend eating it as it’s likely lubricant.

How to resolve the issue…

Some have found that putting warm, soapy water in a container and processing it helps keep the spindle clean. However, I DO NOT recommend doing this for a couple of reasons.

Soap can break down the lubricant. The lubricant is necessary for the machine to work properly.
It’s not recommended to process the machine without having ice cream or a frozen mixture in the container. The machine is not made to process just water (not ice, but water).
Cleaning the spindle doesn’t prevent the lubricant from this issue from continuing to happen. It cleans it for now, but doesn’t help for future uses.
