Is It Normal for the Ninja Creami Spindle to Stick Out?

If you look at your Ninja Creami and notice the spindle poking out of the bottom of the machine, you might wonder if something is wrong. Nothing is wrong. Here’s why it looks like that and what to expect.

Is it normal for the Ninja Creami spindle to stick out?

Yes. The spindle sticking out of the bottom of the machine when it is off is completely normal and exactly how it is supposed to look. It sticks out about an inch when the machine is not in use. It should not go all the way back up into the machine. About an inch of the spindle/rod should be showing. This is the default position.

Why the Spindle Sticks Out

The spindle is the shaft that drives the Creamerizer paddle down into the frozen base when the machine is processing. At rest, the spindle sits in its lowered, extended position. It is not designed to retract all the way into the machine when it is not running. What you are seeing when the spindle is visible below the motor head is simply the spindle at rest in its normal position.

When you install the ice cream container and run a program, the spindle drives down through the processing lid into the frozen base and does its job. When the cycle finishes, it returns to its resting position, which is the same extended position you see when the machine is off. This is how every Ninja Creami machine looks.

When to Actually Be Concerned

The spindle sticking out at rest is not a concern. But there are a few things that would be worth paying attention to.

The spindle is visibly bent or damaged. A spindle that is at an angle or has visible physical damage is not normal and should be looked at more closely. If this happens, you will need to contact Ninja to resolve the issue.
The spindle does not move during processing. If you run a program and the machine sounds like it is running but the spindle is not moving down into the ice cream, there’s likely an issue with the machine.
The spindle makes unusual grinding or scraping sounds. Some noise during processing is normal as the paddle works through the frozen base. Grinding or scraping that sounds different or louder than usual, could be a bigger issue with the machine.
The spindle is sticking out more than an inch. If there’s more than about an inch of the spindle showing, that is not normal. Sometimes the spindle/rod seems to get stuck while it’s partially or fully lowered down into the ice cream, or it will not fully retract back up into the machine. When this happens, you can turn the machine off and unplug it for several minutes to see if it will reset. If the spindle does not retract back into the machine (with the exception of about an inch) it usually will not go back up and is a bigger issue with the machine itself.
